Introduction
Yet ANOTHER game by those boys and girls @ gameloft (my god they must have a busy office!) and what can I say, but it's a cracker! The game looks and feels like a cross between Gran Turismo and Burnout (which is no bad thing!) and the gameplay is GLORIOUS!!
Gameplay
The game has several different modes to it, Arcade (with several different game types), Evolution (like Gran Turismo style gaining cash to buy and upgrade cars) and Multiplayer. Most of the Arcade games are "instant" style games that you can play without commiting yourself into a "Serious" game. Evolution is where the game really gets going, it allows you to start the game by earning cash to purchase upgrades to your cars (you can own several cars at one time!). Driving is quite easy - the system grabs a lot from Burnout (the nitrous gage increases for doing risky things like driving too close to other cars or performing jumps and sliding round corners). The cars handle well and quite realisticly with body roll and intertia taking a part in how they accelerate and corner, there are a few annoying glitches though, but that is down to the platform that the game runs on rather than sloppy coding! (sometimes you get caught on the edges of vehicles and the track borders, but it's never usually too serious!)
Graphics
The graphics in this game are amazing! Easily as good as Tony Hawks. The cars look VERY good (considering they are low polygon count models) and the lighting effects are superb. The graphics easily rival GranTurismo on the PSX for quality and on a screen that is this small that's REALLY impressive!
Sound
The sound in the game is a little basic, but it's not bad... After all, it's engine noise - and it varies according to engine revs (pitch change) the Music however is a different story... while it's very good, it does get very annoying, infact I have turned it off as it was driving me up the wall!!
Lastability
The game has a good lasting appeal, especially with the multiplayer game added in it (you do need to turn the Phone into "flight mode" (no signal) to keep the framerate high) but is ultimately replayable and unlocking the tracks and races is a good achievement.
Conclusion
This game is probably the best racing game I have seen for a handheld, it bodes well that a company like gameloft is producing such high quality titles for these devices. Until we get to see and play Colin McRae and Glimerati, Asphalt will definately be staying close to the top of my "favorite" list!
