Darxide EMP Review

Introduction

Tired of the same old top down and sidescrolling blasters that have been about on mobiles for ages? Then take a look @ Darxide EMP from Frontier Studios (David Braben owns this company, he was partially responsible for the classic game ELITE for the BBC micro) for the S60 platform!

Gameplay

Instantly hooks you, mainly due to the easy to control craft, right down to the complicated levels further on in the game. It looks and plays similar to the Sega Mega CD version that was released many years ago (also by Frontier Studios), that game then received many accolades. The gameplay is level based, with various sub missions to complete before you can move on to the next level. With an easy learning curve over the first few levels (and a great time in blasting objects!) the difficulty suddenly ramps up, and by level 5, it will start challenging even the most die hard gamer!

Graphics

The graphics are very well done, nice use of a very fast 3D engine (looks like it is based upon 'Frontier : Elite 2' 3D Engine) with some nice graphical touches. Objects and ships explode in a satisfying way and asteroids explode into separate, shootable, smaller asteroids. The speeding up and slowing down effect with the camera is especially effective!

Sound

The sounds in this game are adequate, with a varying tone for the engine noise, however the lasers on your craft and the enemies sound a little weak. The miners calls for help ammused me for quite a time :)

Lastability

If you like a good solid blaster, then this is the game for you! If you like a tricky mission based flight sime, then this game is also for you! The only thing that would make this game the MUST HAVE game, would be to have upto a 4player BT deathmatch, but as it stands it will keep you going for quite a long time and the replay value is high.

Conclusion

For £4.50 you can't go wrong, also, the downloadable .sis file is less than 400Kb so it will install on just about any N-gage (even if you put it on the internal memory - not recommended). This game is also compatible with ANY Symbian Series 60 Device (that includes the 6600 and several other makes of phone). This game gets a 2 thumbs up from me and I look forward to Frontier Studio's next foray into the realm of Mobile entertainment!
